    Fired Up for Basketball

Sunday was the last home game for the Drake women’s basketball team.  It’s kind of bittersweet – another year until we can go to the games again, but it also means spring is just around the corner.  And I’ll take spring!! Growing up I’ve always had a love for basketball.  When growing up in Webster City, we didn’t have girls basketball, except for intramurals.  That’s not the same. Evidently, at that time Webster City was considered a “big” school and only the small schools in Iowa had girls sports.  So, I became a great spectator.  I remember going to Jefferson Gym and watching the high school boys play.  That sure…

    Avocado Black Bean Enchiladas

I think it’s time to share a recipe that isn’t for something sweet, even though sweets are loved at my house!!  We love good main dish recipes, too, and this recipe for avocado black bean enchiladas is one of our recent favorites.  I look forward to making them for dinner because I know I’ll have leftovers for lunch the next day.  Yum!! I started with a basic recipe for the enchiladas themselves.  But I wanted to make something that had less sodium, so I looked for ways to cut that wherever I could.  As a result, I found another recipe for the green enchilada sauce.  I combined the two to…

Books I Like to Read – Favorite Authors – Part I

Right after I retired (the end of April 2016), the first thing I wanted to do was to catch up on my reading.  For years, I’d been a member of a book club (one where you buy books) and I had accumulated quite a few books to read by my favorite authors.  But with my book club reading (A Novel Group), I was struggling to read more than I had to. I was so excited about the opportunity to read for hours at a time.  Over the years, I used to read before bed at night, but that had become a challenge.  Those of you in my age group probably know…

    My First Month of Blogging

I decided one day I wanted to start a blog and soon after, embarked on this blogging journey.  I was so excited about it but it took me ten days to actually start doing anything after I secured my domain name.  I tend to be a perfectionist and before I started, I wanted to make sure I had all my ducks in a row, i.e., I knew what I was doing. I read lots of other blogger’s posts about blogging – how to start a blog in 1o days, the 5 things you need to do to start a blog, yada yada yada.  I think I confused more than helped…

    Peanut Butter Cup Brownies

By popular demand (well, from Tim anyway), I’m posting the recipe for Peanut Butter Cup Brownies.  These are unbelievably good, but so simple to make. The recipe I have says to use a box brownie mix.  But I already have the best brownie recipe there is, and it’s just as easy as a mix to make.  One thing I especially like is not having to use a mixer.  I just get out my favorite wooden spoon and mix things together. The brownie recipe I love came directly from Ghirardelli, and who should know better than them about chocolate.  You might be able to find small containers of their ground chocolate…

    My BFFs (Best Furry Friends)

I always thought I was a dog person, so I assumed someday, my best furry friend would be a dog. We got a dog when I was in 8th grade and she died when I was 28.  She continued to live with my parents, of course, after I left home.  But she was still my dog and was always happy to see me.  She would stay with me when they were out of town.  I will never forget the day she died.  It broke my heart. Over the years, I would think about getting a dog, but never thought it would be fair to the dog.  I was gone a…

    Snow Day

I wouldn’t normally post twice in one day, but today it’s snowing, and I have to write about it while it’s fresh in my mind.  It’s funny how I view these snow days differently than when I worked.  When they forecast the snow for today, I was actually excited.  You see, this is one of the things I couldn’t wait for my first winter of retirement – a day when I could just stay inside, watch it snow and feel bad that all my friends still had to go to work.  Does that sound kind of mean? But it didn’t snow that much my first winter.  Bummer!!  And even this…

    A Novel Group – My Book Club’s 2017 Picks

My book club – A Novel Group – will celebrate ten years together in September.  We’ve had a few changes in membership over the years, but not many.  We started with six members and we currently have six.  It’s a good number. A Novel Group – what we’re about A couple friends from work and I decided to start a book club.  We like to read and it was another way to get together on a regular basis.  Each of us invited one other person to join the group, so we’d have six members. And of course, we had to have a catchy name.  We came up with A Novel…

    My “Go To” Oatmeal Cookies

Do you have that one cookie recipe you always go to when you need or want cookies?  I do.  And it gets a lot of rave reviews.  First, a little background on how I started using this recipe. Junior High Home Ec Class I have very fond memories of my junior high days in Webster City, Iowa.  And one thing that’s stayed with me all these years is an oatmeal cookie recipe – my go to cookies!!  Well, this recipe came from my 7th grade home economics class taught by Mrs. Scribbins.  I know all of my WC friends know who I’m talking about.  She was a fun teacher and…
